Asian + Latin Fusion: Las Olas {Uptown}

When you think sushi, you don’t usually think tacos, but in Las Olas‘ case, it totally works. This past weekend a friend celebrated her Hoboken birthday with a girls’ dinner at this fabulous sushi restaurant with a Latin flare {located at 1319 Washington Street}. The perfect girls night out dinner spot, I’d say…

The back garden dining area was opening, and since it was gorgeous out, we sat under the twinkling lights in the backyard. How adorable is this?

Normally I wouldn’t think of chips & guac going well with my sushi dinner, but we were pleasantly surprised. The chips and guac (as well as the chips we ordered with tartare) hit the spot as we were waiting for our meals.

Guac and chips!

The (red) Las Olas Sangria pitcher we ordered was bigger than I’ve ever seen, and between the 3 of us (out of 6) that split it, we each got about 3 glasses. It was $25, but divided by 8 or 9 glasses, that’s pretty awesome. Not to mention delicious. Las Olas also had a variety of specialty cocktails — all with a spicy flare. Think Spicy Strawberry Margarita (jalapeno infused tequila & fresh strawberry puree), Sparkling White Peach Saketini (flavor infused sake, vodka, and peach nectar), and Pineapple Cilantro Margarita (silver tequila mixed with fresh pineapple and cilantro). Here’s a full list. Must. Try. All.

As far as our dinners, we ordered some latin infused with japanese, that’s fo sho.

My sushi din – so scrumptious.

I switched it up from my generic salmon avocado roll order (which I order at most sushi restaurants) and ordered the Aloha Roll {grilled pineapple, tuna, and spicy salmon, topped with sweet potato flakes, tobiko, and sweet/spicy sauce} as well as a sweet potato roll. Boy, am I glad I switched it up! It was deeeelicious — although somewhat spicy (which I like – in moderation), but I was ready for it. A yummy blend of crunchy, soft, sweet, and spicy — I would definitely order this again if I’m feeling in the mood for a little spice. If you look at the special sushi menu (where the Aloha roll is from), it is chock-full of jalapeno and spice-infused entrees.

More sushi!

So what else did we get? Pork Tacos.  Welp, the pork tacos are TDF. We loved them! Three of my friends ordered them, and I couldn’t help but pick off their plates with my chopsticks (it was actually fun picking up the meat that way). The pork was glazed and delicious — it’s another must for a menu order.

Pork tacos for the WIN!

And the entree is huge! Luckily two of the girls split the tacos + fried rice (also yum!) so it wasn’t so overwhelming. I want to try the fish tacos next time. I hear good things. On the website Las Olas has $2 Tacos on Tuesdays. I’m thinking there’s a Tuesday trip in the near future.

Fried Rice with some veggies.

 For dessert, you can bet that we got something for the birthday girl — a delicious chocolate fried ice cream (oh. my. gooooodness. it was so good). With 6 spoons, we all dug in. Here are the remnants (not pretty, but oh-so-amazing):

Fried Chocolate Ice Cream. Oh my gah.

My only issue was that there was a TON of whipped cream, which overpowered the fried dough at first. But once we got past that point, it was game on.

All in all — such a great place to dine with friends or take a date. The backyard is so relaxing and adorable on a nice night, and if you’re in the mood, take a quick stroll to the waterfront for a peek at the beautiful NYC skyline. They also have seating in the front along Washington Street which is great for some people watching! I found the staff attentive and friendly, and I will definitely be back for some tacos, sushi, and chocolate fried ice cream. Maybe next time not all at once, or I may need to up my personal training to 3x a week…

Have you been to Las Olas? What did you think?
